For a design that is now over 50 years old, the Mk1 Escort is shaping up rather well, don’t you think? Its clean lines, lack of fins and that slimline, dog-bone grille help it to look far more contemporary than its rivals of the period.
That’s just one of the main reasons why, five decades on, the original Escort is held in such high regard so for this issue we’ve put together a selection of celebratory features highlighting its achievements both as a main player in the classic Ford scene and as a icon of the motorsport world, too.
We still find it hard to accept that a car that was so prevalent on our roads when we were kids is now positively vintage, yet here we are in 2018 and the Mk1 is not only celebrating a major birthday but it’s also ever been in better shape with levels of popularity that have pushed it to iconic status, and with an inventory of new parts available that (its younger brother, the Mk2 aside), makes other Ford models of the era insanely jealous. Happy birthday, Mk1.
